Strategy for exports to generate more trade and new jobs

The launch took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark with the Confederation of Danish Industries (DI) and the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions (LO), in front of 250 companies and 40 trade department heads from Danish embassies and consulate generals in the most promising export markets.

Last year, Denmark exceeded the magical figure more than DKK 1,000 billion in exports. Around 725,000 jobs in Denmark today are directly linked to exports. With the appointment of a Minister for Trade, a targeted focus on growth markets, an extensive modernisation of the Danish Foreign Service and now the first comprehensive export strategy, the government is working to secure better opportunities for Danish companies in international markets. This will contribute to growth, new jobs underpinning Danish welfare.

Minister for Trade and Development Cooperation Mogens Jensen says:

- One in four Danish jobs depends on our exports. Therefore, the government is now launching 40 specific initiatives to strengthen our exports to large nearby markets, major growth markets and developing countries on their way to growth. We address local development challenges while giving Danish companies a stronger foothold by utilizing synergies between development and trade.

- This represents the most significant prioritisation and restructuring of Danish export promotion activities since the founding of the Trade Council in 2001. All of the government’s ministers can play a role in supporting exports through inter-ministerial strategic sector cooperation and we will be sending 15 to 20 growth counsellors to the most promising developing and emerging economies. This will improve the framework for sustainable development, growth and employment in these countries, while paving the way for the Danish solutions that are needed and in high demand. The potential result is export orders in the billions, strengthening our role in the world.

- The increased efforts, coupled with the modernisation of the Danish Foreign Service, represent the government’s response to the global economic shift towards new centres of growth. The Danish Foreign Service will be linked more closely with the Danish business community, thereby supporting companies’ internationalisation and growth.

- Developing countries increasingly seek technology, knowledge, trade and investment as the way out of poverty to create more sustainable and lasting growth. The new initiatives enable us to deliver solutions to these challenges in areas such as agriculture, food, health, water, energy, infrastructure and optimisation, and industrial production.

The business community has called for these programmes. It is a matter of strengthening the political and economic advisory services, helping small and medium-sized companies off to a better start, providing a single portal to the export promotion programmes, promoting projects with high capital expenditures, identifying business opportunities in developing countries, creating better loan opportunities, improving innovation efforts, creating an agricultural investment fund and launching more business promotion activities in promising markets.

With this strategy, the government will ensure that companies fully benefit from the new growth orientation in the Danish representation structure, implemented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2014. This August, the government will open embassies in Nigeria, Columbia, the Philippines, and Myanmar, and a trade commission in Lagos, providing access to markets with a total population of more than 300 million people.

As part of the new strategy, an additional DKK 155m will be allocated to export promotion and economic diplomacy efforts in 2015. The strategy includes nine overall measures with a total of 40 initiatives.

The Trade Council advises approximately 6,000 Danish companies annually on exports and internationalisation.
