Community Opening of Town Centre in Kibera slum

28.07.2014  14:11

Thursday the 24th of July, the Danish Embassy was a part of the opening of a new Town Centre in Kibera, the biggest slum in Nairobi with a population of 1.6 million people. The Town Centre was opened by the Danish actress Connie Nielsen, who is CO-founder and president of Human Needs Project, who are funding the project.

The Town Centre is an innovative, clean tech, infrastructure facility with its own clean source of water thanks to water pumps delivered by the Danish company Grundfos together with the Kenyan company, Davis & Shirtliff.

Furthermore, it has its own clean source to power and a recycle system for its wastewater. The center provides high quality basic services (water, toilets, showers, laundry) and empowerment services such as business skills training, micro-credit, wifi café, health kiosk and a green market place.

All of this for a fair price to the people of Kibera. These services will help the residents of Kibera to save time and money and at the same time create economic growth and enhancing the life quality.
