International conference focussing on global inequality

20.02.2013  09:17

Minister for Development Cooperation Mr Christian Friis Bach co-hosted the international conference alongside Mr Paul Victor Obeng, Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission in Ghana, Mr Anthony Lake, Executive Director of UNICEF, and Ms Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of UN Women.  The event resulted in a number of ambitious recommendations on the international engagement in fighting inequality.

The recommendations emphasise that addressing inequality is a prerequisite for effectively eradicating extreme poverty and ensuring sustainable socioeconomic development – and there was general agreement that inequality represents one of the biggest social, economic and political challenges at the global level today. Special emphasis was given to the need of integrating human rights principles in a future development framework – especially with regards to gender equality and women’s rights. Mr Christian Friis Bach states:

“The conference has resulted in a number of strong recommendations. A new set of global development goals should unite the world in getting to zero when it comes to eradicating extreme poverty. The basic rights of women and girls must be strengthened and human rights should be a driving force in our future common endeavours. These are all key recommendations with which I agree and will work for”.

The conference is part of a series of global consultations organised by the UN as part of the process of formulating a new set of global development goals to replace the eight Millennium Development Goals of the UN. The full report of the global consultation on addressing inequalities is found here.
