Statement by the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Kristian Jensen following the well-conducted elections in Burkina on November 29 2015

02.12.2015  19:44

”I wish to congratulate the Burkinabe people with the successful completion of the presidential- and parliamentary elections in Burkina Faso this Sunday. The elections mark that the transition process has successfully come to an end, and demonstrate the robustness of the Burkinabe democracy following the popular uprising in 2014 against president Blaise Compaoré as well as the failed coup d´etat in September this year. The Burkinabe people and society have shown that it is ready to turn a new page in the history of the country. This is a very positive development both for the Sahel-region and the African continent.

Burkina Faso is an important partner for Denmark in West Africa. We have a long term development cooperation with the country going back to 1973. An important element of this cooperation is support to the civil society and the democratic institutions. Denmark is together with the rest of the international society ready to assist in ensuring a continued positive development in Burkina Faso”.
