Kenya Climate Innovation Center

Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) provides holistic, country-driven support to accelerate the development, deployment and transfer of locally relevant climate and clean energy technologies. KCIC provides incubation, capacity building services and financing to Kenyan entrepreneurs and new ventures that are developing innovative solutions in energy, water and agribusiness to address climate change. KCIC has received DKK 65 million for periods 2016-2021 which will be used to providing incubation services, provision of proof of concept, grants and seed funding with the purpose of scaling up innovations, and supporting climate mitigation and adaptation. The purpose is to allow locally adopted solutions to be scaled up and become sustainable and profitable businesses creating jobs.

KCIC has been in operation for the past 5 years and has so far supported over 170 innovations. To date through these businesses 150,656 metric tons of CO2 emissions have been avoided. Over 80 business have commercialized generating sales revenues of $ 10,995,407 through the sale of low carbon sources, attracting public and private investments worth over $ 6,693,317 into the businesses. The businesses have contributed to the creation of 1602 jobs across the three thematic areas.

KCIC will continue investing and supporting the growth of clean tech businesses for the next five years. In line with the KCIC 5-year strategic plan and the donor engagement document agreement with Danida, KCIC will strive to support commercialization of 105 clean tech businesses which will create over 1500 new jobs. To boost the upscaling of the businesses, KCIC will facilitate public and private investments worth $ 20,000,000 into the clean tech businesses. KCIC will continue to lobby and advocate for policy change by government through partnerships with the private sector in order to continuously influence and create an enabling environment for sustainable business growth of clean tech enterprises.
