Regional, Refugee and Humanitarian Team

Kenya hosts some of the largest numbers of refugees in the world and is home to some of the world´s largest refugee camps. Provision of basic services and durable solutions are a challenge for both refugees and host communities around the camps. Denmark is embarking on a new, large-scale programme to support the delivery of basic services in Turkana County that brings together a range of partners – NGOs, local and central government, philanthropic foundations – in addressing those issues. Kenya is the political and economic powerhouse of East Africa and carry a large potential for development through trade and economic integration.  The Regional, Refugee and Humanitarian team covers both trade and private sector development engagements, as well as refugee and humanitarian issues. In addition, the team is also responsible for side-accredited countries, including Malawi, Seychelles and Mauritius. 

As an intern, you will act as an integrated part of the team and will be expected to contribute to all tasks in the team’s portfolio.

Learning
As an intern in the Regional, Refugee and Humanitarian Team, you will have an opportunity to work closely with the team leader and the programme managers in managing and implementing programmes, building and maintaining a network with a wide range of partners and contributing to products for the Foreign Ministry in Copenhagen. You will generally deal with reporting, development cooperation, administration and communication within the area: Regional affairs, humanitarian cooperation, and refugees and host communities in Kenya.

  • Reporting: you will contribute to analysing and writing thematic reports to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen on significant refugee and humanitarian issues in Kenya, as well as side-accredited countries as relevant.
  • Managing relations: Additionally, you will participate in and organize meetings with civil society partners, other diplomatic missions, international organizations and authorities within the team's work areas, when deemed relevant.
  • Development cooperation: In cooperation with your supervisor and the other team members, you will contribute to the implementation of engagements under the team’s portfolio incl. the new refugee program (2023-2026) and engagements regarding regional economic development and regional trade interventions- This includes involvement in Danida Business Instruments as well.
  • Administration and general diplomacy: As an intern, you will be acquainted with the practical workings of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This includes learning about the management of development programmes, diplomacy, the coordination between the Embassy and Copenhagen and getting familiar with the financial and archiving systems used by the Ministry.
  • Communication/ public diplomacy: You will contribute to public diplomacy efforts to promote the work done by the Embassy and the team by providing support towards the implementation of the Embassy’s Strategic Communications activities in close coordination with the embassy's communications officer and intern.
  • Other tasks can arise on an ad-hoc basis.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor degree and admission at master level at a Danish University in a relevant field for this position.
  • Familiarity with development policy, international relations, refugee and humanitarian issues and/or Kenyan politics is considered an asset.
  • Adaptability and curiosity are desired characteristics since you will be living and working in a new environment.
  • Good intercultural skills, a strong team spirit and willingness to collaborate with colleagues to reach common results are critical.
  •  Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Danish citizenship or fulfilling the following requirements: The applicant has lived in Denmark for a longer period of time (at least 3-4 years), is admitted at a Danish University or Business School and at the time of applying has residence in Denmark.

Practicalities
The Embassy provides a monthly supplement of DKK 5000 of which approximately half is spent on rent for the apartment shared by the Embassy’s seven interns. Due to regulation regarding SU and compensation, you will have two options regarding the supplement: 

  1. Choose not to receive SU and get the monthly supplement of DKK 5000 per month.
  2. Receive SU and hand in documentation of concrete expenses (including flight tickets, vaccines, insurance, etc.) up to DKK 5000 per month.

Due to Nairobi being a city with high security risks there are certain limitations to the movements of the interns. Regular security briefings will be provided by the Embassy.
